Honey Sauced Chicken

Hi Pinterest visitors! This recipe is delicious, but I have a few others that we LOVE EVEN MORE!

to be pointed to my main page with the most recent recipes, or
to get to all of our favorite Chicken recipes! Thanks for stopping in!

Oooo this meal was good...probably because it was a piece of cake, and because it was delicious! My hubb took one bite and complimented me, which is a hard thing to get sometimes...well, that immediately anyway! I really loved just throwing this in the crockpot and coming back 3 hours later to a finished meal. However, if you want to make it a 30 minute meal, I think cooking it in the oven would be equally as tasty. (P.S. The recipe actually used chicken WINGS, I substituted chicken breasts).

Honey Sauced Chicken

3/4 pound chicken (of your choice)
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/8 cup chopped onion (or 1/16 cup onion flakes)
1/8 cup ketchup
1 Tbs. vegetable oil
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes

Season both sides of chicken with salt and pepper, put into crock pot. In a small bowl, combine honey, soy sauce, onion, ketchup, oil, garlic and pepper flakes. Pour over chicken. Cook on low for 3 hours or on high 1 1/2 hours. Chicken into bite size pieces, then return to pot and toss with sauce. Serve over rice or noodles.

To bake chicken as a 30 minute meal:
Dice chicken and season both sides with salt and pepper, place in 8x8 pan. Pour sauce over chicken and bake at 350 for 20 minutes, stirring after 10 minutes.

Serves 2.

Love this dish! I adapted it to my liking by cutting the raw chicken into bize size pieces, frying them in a little olive oil, adding a little mrs. dash to the chicken while cooking, when fully cooked I add the sauce (minus the olive oil since I fried the chicken in it) and let the chicken simmer in the sauce until it thickens a little. Gives it a little bit of a different flavor, but still SO GOOD! Thanks for sharing! I love your blog!

Made this tonight--SO good! I could eat mountains of this! I used 1 lbs of chicken thighs and only 1/3 c honey. It's perfect that way, or for a spicy hit, a couple of drops of Sriracha is so so good!

I'm not sure what everyone is raving about. I made this tonight and it's terrible. It's watery and tastes like honey only. I hated it.

Chelsea and Cody said...

Thanks everyone...it is a delicious go to meal. Bree-sorry yours didn't turn out! I have made this 100 times and it is great. Better luck next time!

I found this recipe on Pinterest. I made it when my hubby was out of town and the kids loved it soo much they requested I make it when Daddy comes home. Mine was a little watery but that worked out well as I gave the kids little bowls of sauce for them to dip their chicken in. I will be making it for the 3rd time tonight. Sooo yummy..can't wait to eat it! Thanks!

I stumbled across this recipe on Pinterest, and I am glad I did! I had to make more chicken to feed 5 of us, so I doubled the honey and just guessed all the rest. Mine turned out watery but it was PERFECT. It made a great sauce for rice. I am definitely adding this into our rotation. Thanks!

Amy Anderson said...

I made this last night and it turned out delicious made in the oven. Like the others, mine was watery, but that was okay. The true test was my 4 year old and he DEVOURED it. I'm posting about it on my blog today. Hope you check it out! (http://www.alittlenosh.net)

Janis said...

After reading the previous comments about the dish being watery, I decided to try this on the stovetop. I browned the chicken (boneless, skinless breasts) for a few minutes on each side, then added the sauce and about 1/4 cup of water. Then I covered and simmered for about 15 minutes (kind of forgot to check the time). Then I took the cover off, turned the heat to high and the sauce turned into a lovely thick glaze for the chicken. I thought this was too sweet for my taste, but it was still super yummy. I might use less honey next time, maybe 1/3 cup. My 3 year old loved it :)

Katie said...

If I put the chicken in the crockpot frozen, do i need to cook it longer?

I made this tonight and it was freaking' awesome! Everyone in the family loved it, including the three kids. We literally licked our plates clean.

After reading all the reviews I put a tablespoon of cornstarch in to thicken the sauce and it was perfect. I doubled it and it was all eaten...thanks for the recipe!

the_albino_1 said...

This is delicious! I made it on the stove top by cooking the chicken a little bit and then adding the sauce mixture. It was awesome!

Unknown said...

Your recipe made its way to Pinterest! Congratulations! I'm going to make this right now. Will remember to add a bit of cornstarch to finish and thicken the sauce.

Cheryl Kohan said...

This looked so good on Pinterest that I just had to check it out! I'll bet it's as good as it looks, too.

Unknown said...

Here's my suggestion.

I cut up the chicken breast into
1" pieces, like someone had suggested. Then I tossed them with some cornstarch, just to coat. It thickened the sauce nicely.

The sauce was not overly sweet. It was good and I would make it again.

I've tried it today and it tasted really terrible, don't get me wrong,I think I would like your recipe but I did something wrong.Mine turned out much darker, nearly black, and tasted mostly like soy sauce and nothing else.So I'm trying to figure out what I did wrong.I've used an internet converter for cups to milliliter,it told me I should use 65 ml soy sauce,is that right or did I use too much?Or did I use the wrong kind of soy sauce, because mine turned out so dark?

AP2466 said...

I was not at all impressed with this recipe. It is way to salty with all that soy sauce - I have no idea why in addition you would also season the meat with salt?! I made it in the crockpot for 3 hrs on low as suggested thinking this would result in juicy/tender chicken, but no - still too dry. If I'm going to dirty my crockpot and make dinner 3 hours ahead of time, it had better taste better than this. Not to mention that this recipe (unlike most chicken recipes) really is no longer healthy once you've added all that honey, ketchup, soy sauce... Will be deleting this from my saved recipes.

Sandy said...

I made this over the weekend and tweaked it a bit, came out great though! I sliced my chicken breasts thin, dredged in flour and pan fried, then I cooked the onions, when they were done, I added equal parts butter/flour and whisked until smooth, then I added the liquid ingredients, then the chicken and let it sit on low for about 10 - 15 min while stirring frequently. It was not too watery at all, nor did it have too much soy or honey flavor to it. For those who had bad luck with the recipe, maybe give this way a try.

I just made this for dinner tonight, in the oven. It was delicious and SO EASY to throw together for a weeknight meal. I am definitely going to make it again. Thank you for sharing the recipe!!

Mama J said...

I made this last night and the flavor was delicious. I baked it in the oven because I didn't have enough time for the crock pot. The sauce didn't thicken as I thought it would so I added cornstarch and it was great. Thanks for the recipe!

Sara said...

Just made this for dinner -- I did it the way Janis made it above on the stovetop. The sauce thickened nicely after heating it on high. Took about 25 minutes from start to finish on the stovetop. Yummy!

Suzanne said...

Hey Haters, quit your bitching. I made this tonight exactly as written and it was a hit.

okidokiphotography said...

For the people who say it is too watery.. I guess chicken companies inject water into the meat to make the look meatier. In return makes things more watery. Just a thought.

Donna Preston said...

Thank you for sharing this recipe. You saved my week night. I made a few changes to convert it to a stove top recipe. I used a little cornstarch to coat the chicken and the sauce ended up thick and delicious. For those of you who wish to prepare this in the slow cooker, I would suggest a little cornstarch slury at the end.

Here's my take: http://whatthedogate.blogspot.com/2012/02/honey-chicken.html

Katie said...

I have tried this recipe in the crockpot and in the oven. The whole family raved about the meal in the crockpot but when I made it in the oven it was just ok. Maybe marinating the chicken before baking it would help?

Sher Bear said...

This Dish was Delish! I tried it in the oven and it was so yummy. Mine did end up runny but it still had great flavor. Was perfect over rice. Probably too watery if you ate the chicken plain but over rice- YUM! Next time I will try mixing in a little cornstarch or coating the chicken with cornstarch first. Easy, Yummy meal- don't let the reviews scare you... just put it over rice! Will add a pinch more red pepper next time for a bit more kick!

pippy76 said...

Delicious recipe! I made twice already and it is yummy! I add broccoli to it and its great!

Teale said...

Made this last night per your instructions and it was a hit. We had it with brown rice. If you turn your crock pot off and let it sit for a little while the sauce will thicken up. We thought it was great. It's going in the rotation!

Pruett said...

This is my 2nd time making this dish - the only change I made was to cut the chicken into bite size pieces, dust them with cornstarch, brown them in a skillet and then add to the crockpot. The cornstarch thickened the sauce perfectly and my kids loved it. So delicious!

Kathy said...

Like many of the other commenters, I thickened the sauce by making a cornstarch slurry at the end. I also added cashews for a little crunch and served over rice. It was delicious! Thanks for a great recipe!!

Hi, I have a question...has anyone doubled or tripled this recipe? I would like to make this for company tonight but I am concerned about the cook time. I want to put it in the crockpot, if I triple it, would the chicken be done after 3 hours on low? Thanks!

Donna said...

Question: Is the recipe calling for 3/4 lb. of chicken or 3 to 4 lbs. of chicken? Making tonight so hope this turns out good.

Sabrina said...

Looks relish and I bought the ingredients to try it but after writing the first few ingredients in my calorie tracker....there is no way! It comes out to over 500 calories per serving. Jealous of the lucky ones who did get to try this though!

Thank you for this recipe! I've made it many times. I use fresh chopped onion, garlic powder, and added about 1/2 teaspoon of Chinese five spice. I throw in some fresh broccoli during the last 30 minutes of the 1.5 hour on high cooking time. Delicious served with brown rice. Our family loves it.

SandiB said...

Made this tonite in the oven and a miracle occured...all5people in the family LOVED it!!! I wouldnt change a thing!

Safia said...

This was very good. I used a little less honey and a red onion. I also cooked the extra sauce with some corn starch at the end to make it thicken up and poured it over the chicken and some broccoli with rice.

You are so right about this being favoured by menfolk! LOL I made it this last week and the whole family loved it. Thanks for a great recipe!

I made this tonight, and it was delicious!

I used about 1.5 pounds of boneless, skinless chicken thighs, roughly trimmed. I cooked on low for almost 3 hours, and then added a package of frozen stir-fry vegetables that I'd mostly thawed in the microwave. I cooked it another 20 minutes or so. Then I took out the chicken and veggies and poured the sauce into a skillet. I thickened it with some cornstarch (dissolved in water first). I added the chicken and veggies to the skillet to mix with the sauce. We ate it over brown rice. The whole family loved it, and we have leftovers for another meal.

Thanks for the great recipe! Your Thai peanut chicken is next on my "to try" list! :)

I found this recipe on Pinterest and tried it right away! It is amazing and was a hit with the whole family! Thank you so much for sharing!

I've made this dish several times. I find that only comes out on the watery side when you cook it on high for 1.5 hours rather than on low for 3+ hours, so I've taken to doing the longer and lower setting. I serve it over a bed of white rice with a side of veggies and it's been a hit with my entire family including all 3 of my very picky children. It's great! I think that sauce would be excellent on chicken wings too and vow to try it some day in the not too distant future. Thank you for this recipe which has now become one of our family's go to favorites!

Unknown said...

Has anyone made this with a whole chicken? I want to try but I'm afraid to ruin it or not make enough sauce. Do you think its only good with chicken breast or would it be just as good on a whole chicken?

JenFlores said...

My family LOVES this. I like the ease of it. Thank you!

Question- Do I double the recipe if I am making it for four? or do I just add more chicken?

Chelsea and Cody said...

Yvette, if you are making it for double the people I would definitely double the entire recipe!

I just made this last night for the first time-what a big hit! I dredged the chicken in cornstarch first (did not brown it, though) to thicken the sauce and that worked great.

I may try a few tweaks next time but everyone agreed there WILL be a next time-yum!

Thanks for sharing it!

Had this last week over rice and it was so good! My honey used a whole bottle of honey to make it extra sweet. We loved it. Thanks for the recipe!!

Unknown said...

YUM!! This was so easy! I changed the recipe by adding a little garlic and cornstarch, and sprinkled sesame seeds over it when it I served it. I piled it atop Jasmine rice with a side of steamed carrots and sugar snap peas. My picky 5 yr old started reciting Dr. Seuss after her first bite, "I would eat this in a box and I would eat this with a fox..." My 6 yr old ate 3 plates!! I call that a win. Definitely doing this P.S. I used the oven method.

daday said...

This was pretty darn good! Really easy as well... so easy that I didn't think it would turn out that great but it did. I used the stove top method to cook my chicken. I had the same problem with the watery sauce but fixed that easily by adding 1 tbsp corn starch dissolved in 1 tbsp of water a little at a time at the end. My sauce was the perfect consistency! This is not a huge amount of food and in fact we only got two servings out of it (and we are not ravinous eaters!!) I made this exactly as directed with the exception of doubling the sauce as initially it did not look like enough. I served it over Jasimine rice and had steamed carrots. This is a perfect, easy and fast recipe for a weeknight. Thank you!

i just have to say that we LOVE this dish . my 5 year old requests it at least ever 3 or 4 days. i make it about 3 times a month. thank you for sharing it

I love this recipe but would like to know how to make the sauce thicker? I have never made the crock pot version and wonder if that would make the difference.
I like making the oven version because I'm usually not that well prepared for dinners.
Any suggestions?

Unknown said...

I'm making this tonight! We had a chef salad w/chicken tender for lunch and I chopped and fried the chicken for tonight at the same time. There are 9 of us, so I just fried the amount I knew we'll need. This seems like a very adaptble recipe. If it's watery, I'll add cornstarch like others have said, if its too sweet, I'll add more soy. It sounds like it'll be great! I'm serving it with brown rice and a cauliflower/broccoli mix.

Unknown said...

Just finished, and it was Yummy! Maybe other people's was watery from the juices in the chicken as it cooked. But with my chicken already cooked, the sauce formed more of a sweet and spicy glaze that EVERYONE gobbled up!. Definitely going on my "Tried and Successful" Pinterest board.

Emily M said...

I've made this several times for my husband and me, both baked and crock pot style. It's good every time. Sometimes I add 1/8 - 1/4 cup peanut butter to the sauce, which adds some depth and thickness that we love! My next challenge will be to triple it when we have company over this weekend. Thanks for the recipe!

Another amazingly mainstream north Indian meat delicacy is Chicken Biryani Awadhi. best chicken recipes It initially has a place with a standout amongst the most social city of the nation, Lucknow. This chicken formula essentially has a place with the Mughal time's Kitchen. The mystery of this tasty chicken treat is that it is cooked in layers of chicken and rice.

Out of convenience, most of us just munch on fast foodstuffs and forget how to eat well and healthy. Some say that healthier and healthy system best healthy recipes ideas are far-fetched because it can be costly and hard to sustain just like our body system weight.

Pieces of Me said...

I made the oven version of this last night and was disappointed with how it came out. I checked it at 20 minutes and the chicken was still mostly raw. I know my oven temp was correct because I keep an oven thermometer inside. It took another 15 minutes to cook the chicken completely (so 35 minutes vs the 20 that the recipe says). The sauce was watery and gave the whole meal a watered down taste. I served it over white rice with broccoli. My family all agreed that we prefer the popular sweet & sour chicken made with similar ingredients. The chicken is browned in a skillet with egg and cornstarch, then baked in the sauce. It’s messy to make and takes longer to prepare but it’s worth the effort.
